Packing for an African safari is about balance — you need to be prepared for warm days, cool nights, dust and surprise rain showers, all while keeping your luggage light for small aircraft.
The golden rule: neutral colours (khaki, olive, beige, brown). Bright colours scare wildlife, and dark colours attract tsetse flies. Avoid blue and black.
Essentials: 3–4 lightweight long-sleeved shirts (for sun and mosquito protection), 2–3 pairs of comfortable trousers, a warm fleece or jacket for early morning game drives, a waterproof jacket, and a wide-brimmed hat.
For women, a lightweight scarf is invaluable — for dust, sun, and covering up at cultural sites. Swimwear is essential — most camps have pools.
Laundry services are available at most lodges, so pack for 4–5 days and re-wear items. A 15–20kg soft-sided duffel bag is ideal for bush flights.
