An African safari offers some of the most extraordinary photography opportunities on Earth. With a little preparation, you can capture images that will tell your story for a lifetime.
For wildlife photography, a DSLR or mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses is ideal. A 100–400mm or 200–500mm zoom lens covers most situations — from distant lions to close-up portraits.
For landscape and camp life, a 24–70mm standard zoom is perfect. A fast prime lens (50mm f/1.8) is great for low-light conditions and portraits.
If you don't want to carry heavy gear, modern smartphones with telephoto capabilities can produce excellent results. A pair of compact binoculars is still worth packing.
Essentials: spare batteries (cold mornings drain them fast), a dust-proof camera bag, lens cleaning cloth, and at least 128GB of memory cards.
